Nationally acclaimed Breads of India & Gourmet Curries, finally opened its doors to patrons in Oakland (948 Clay St). Chef/Owner Rohit Singh repeats the formula he perfected at Breads in Berkeley and Walnut Creek - cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients and changing menus daily. He is dedicated to serving classic and regional Indian cuisine. This new location, designed to reflect the early 20th century Raj era, also presents a full bar.
Singh offers over 170 varieties of breads and over 700 dishes through a daily changing menu. Breads of India features tandoori dishes, elaborate curries and breads from different parts of the country. The daily menu provides fine descriptions of the dishes, including how each dish is prepared and its regional origin. The kitchen focuses on serving free-range meats, fresh vegetables and home-made spice blends, organic flour and third party certified organic basmati rice - perfect requirement for the savvy, food conscious Bay Area.
At the Oakland location, Singh presents curries (lamb, chicken or vegetarian) flavored with extra-ordinary ingredients like pomegranate juice, pistachios, saffron, pine nuts, fresh coconut, onion seeds, paired with breads - tandoor baked or griddle cooked flavored with garlic chive, ginger with jajapenos, spicy potatoes, oriental basil, oregano seeds, fresh baby fennel. Not to miss are the sizzling tandoori specialties which include a choice of lean pork chops, free-range chicken breast, Atlantic salmon or jumbo prawns marinated over-night in a home blend of spices, yoghurt, lemon, olive oil and then baked in an indian clay oven.
In addition, the bar offers exotic cocktails, single malts, liqueurs and a well paired wine list to compliment the plethora of spices on the palate. Wines from many local wineries are on the menu including Navarro, Rosemblum, Wente. Specialty drinks span from Bollywood Masti - a vodka based cocktail spiked with Chambord, Pink City Express - coconut rum enhanced with amaretto and cranberry juice, Monsoon Breeze - tequila with a touch of grenadine and many more.
Singh put a lot of money into making an evening at Breads of India Oakland feel opulent. Antique chandeliers, solid marble pillars with lanterns and walls blooming with paintings and color give the dining room a cozy yet spacious feeling. The wood carved chairs and hand-crafted mahogany trimmed tables add to the comfort and make the dining experience relaxing and pleasurable.
Rohit Singh embarked on this journey of offering fresh, delicious food for reasonable prices almost 10 years ago by opening his first store in Berkeley, followed by the next location in Walnut Creek. In Oakland, he continues to display his passion for fine Indian food prepared with the kind of perfection - and affection - a mothers' cooking would have demanded.
Since the inception, Breads of India has been featured and written about in numerous magazines, newspapers published locally and nationally and have received distinctive restaurant awards, both by media and the readers.
